Director of Athletics and Activities
Derek Smith is the Director of Athletics and Activities for Royal Oak Schools, where he oversees and supports student athletics and extracurricular programs at both Royal Oak High School and Royal Oak Middle School. A proud Royal Oak native, Derek brings over two decades of experience as an athletic director, educator, and coach, most recently serving in Utica Community Schools for 23 years.
Derek is a proud graduate of Royal Oak Dondero High School, Class of '96. He graduated from Grand Valley State University with a degree in teaching in 2002, followed by a master’s degree in educational leadership in 2008. Derek has been married to his wife, Kristin, since 2004, and they have two wonderful sons.
Derek is passionate about student engagement beyond the classroom and believes that athletics and activities play a vital role in developing leadership, teamwork, and resilience. His student-centered approach aligns with the district’s mission to provide an inclusive and dynamic learning environment that fosters students' growth and development.
As a former student-athlete himself, Derek is committed to creating opportunities for all students to participate, compete, and connect. He is excited to return to his hometown and build strong relationships with students, staff, families, and the broader Royal Oak community.
Outside of work, Derek values quality time with family and friends, appreciates time spent at the family cabin, and remains actively engaged in multiple activities, particularly coaching, real estate investing, hunting, and fishing.
